Hall of Famer Roberto Alomar was born on this day in 1968. He had a hell of a career with a career batting average of .300, 12 all star games, 10 Gold Gloves, 4 Silver Slugger awards and entry to the Hall of Fame with 90% of the vote.
But his Mets years (year and a half) were not among his best years. In the 2001 season with the Indians, he hit .336 and drove in 100 runs. Mets trade for him and in the 2002 season, he hits .266 with 53 rbi's. It's called Mets Karma. A great player for no reason gets traded to the Mets and hits 70 points lower than the previous year with 47 less ribbies.
That said, the Mets traded Alex Escobar, Matt Lawton and Jerod Riggin for Alomar so we didn't lose a lot.
Still all in all, Alomar was one of the greatest second basemen of all-time both offensively and defensively and certain deserves to be in the Hall of Fame just not based on his Mets years.
"He doesn't go against the book--he's adding new chapters to the book."
--Mike Flanagan
"Alomar has more range than any second baseman I've ever seen."
--Tony Gwynn
