The first thing that made him famous was he is the answer to the ultimate trivia question---he was the first Met pitcher to ever win a game. On April 23, 1962, he won the first game in Mets history.
The second reason for his fame was that he was a very well educated and intelligent guy. This was a source of great humor to Casey Stengel.
Stengel's classic quote about Jay Hook and his genius IQ was,
"You should forget about these big words. You can't get them out in the library."
