One time Met Doug Flynn was born on this day in 1951. Of course most Mets fans know him for being part of the deal that sent Tom Seaver to the Reds. Not a gala day in Mets history.
Though not a great hitter during his tenure with the Mets (he hit .234), he was a terrific fielding second baseman and in 1980 became only the third Met in history to win a Gold Glove.
The Mets great fielding shortstop Bud Harrelson said of the fielding of Flynn,
"The best second baseman on the pivot is Doug Flynn. He's like Bill Mazeroski, a blur."
--Bud Harrelson
