RUSTY STAUB METS BIRTHDAY QUOTE OF THE DAY FOR APRIL 1

Happy Birthday to an all-time great Mets hitter, Rusty Staub. Staub was born on April 1, 1944.  He started his career with the Astros but ended up being traded to the Expos where he became a legend. He was loved in Montreal and was nicknamed Le Grande Orange, for his red hair.

The Mets traded for Staub in 1972, sending the Expos three players in the trade----Tim Foli, Mike Jorgensen and Ken Singleton. Between his injuries, Staub had some very productive years with the Mets. In 1975, he became the first player in Mets history to drive in over 100 rbi's in a season.  He ended his career with 2716 hits and five all-start appearances. He was also one of the greatest hitters in Mets history.

In honor of his years with the Mets, he is today's recipient of the Mets Baseball Quote of The Day,

"He could roll out of bed in winter and get a base hit."
--Bill Giles, on Rusty Staub

Happy Mets Birthday Baseballl Quote to Craig Swan

When I think of Craig Swan, I think of two things. Number One, he led the National League in E.R.A. in 1978, no small accomplishment with that Met team. Number Two, next to Keith, Swanee (as he was affectionately known) had the best mustache in Mets history. Very impressive.

In honor of Swan's long career with the Mets (1973-1984), he gets the Mets Birthday Quote of the Day.

This quote was about his toughness as a player.

"No one ever tried harder to come back than Swanee."
--Rusty Staub, on Craig Swan

Rusty Staub Quotes and Video

Loved Rusty Staub. He was one of the greatest hitters and slowest runners in Met history. I would say he would be the prototype DH, but he was actually a decent fielder for a player with  no speed.

Here are a few Rusty Staub quotes:

"Jack Daniels stock doesn't drop when I'm flying between baseball games."
--Rusty Staub, on his fear of flying

"As a first baseman, he's a good hitter."
--Joe Torre, on Rusty Staub
